Detached

I’ve been feeling a little detached from my game lately.  I lose focus midmatch, forget my options, and fall into patterns and habits.  I can’t help but think that I peaked too soon, now that Devastation is right around the corner.

Honestly, I don’t think I’m ready for it.  Lots of different things happened this evening and I got to meet some of the best players in the country, the ones you see playing on the live streams with commentary on how they play.  It’s a little intimidating, especially with the skill gap being as great as it is.

A pep talk from Nik about the mindset I should have for my first major also opened my eyes a bit too.  I thought playing to see how far you can get and playing to win were similar in nature, but I’m told that the difference between those two is the difference between pot sweeteners and actual players.

It’s likely I won’t have any more training room time before the tournament, as I’ll be playing casuals all day tomorrow.  This may or may not be my last hurrah for Street Fighter as well, despite starting up this blog again.  Regardless, I don’t think I’m ready for it.

Kenzan! A fresh start.

My phone’s freaking awesome.  Bypassed the Phoenix Municipal Court’s FTP restrictions by sending the files to my phone and then uploading them from there.

Welcome to Street Fighter Blog Version 2.0: Kenzan!  Everything is now centered on Ibuki, my new main character.  I’ve been playing her since before Super came out, she’s so much fun.  She’s like a mix between Viper and Akuma, and each day I find something new for her.  I’ll get into a rant about how much I love this character some other time, but hopefully Kenzan! will be successful.

Profound Sadness

I wanted to update this blog for my new choice of character, Ibuki.  This is because I’ve got a ton of sit-around-and-do-nothing time while in Jury Duty.  But the Municipal Court’s wireless doesn’t allow connections to file servers, so I can’t upload any images or new wordpress themes.  I guess all I can do is set up some categories and the like.

Still have to come up with a new name for the blog and stuff, though.

I do have this set up, though:

Maybe I’ll translate that to blog entries.

Lack of posts

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, life’s been hectic and there hasn’t been much development in my Viper game, and the other stuff that I have developed I can’t quite talk about yet.

This site may have an overhaul in the near future.  New look, new name, new main.

KEN ZAN!

Training Session Regimen

A couple of days ago I answered a question in the Viper Q & A thread on SRK, regarding what to practice in training mode.  With that in mind, and with me playing in training mode right now for kicks, I’ve decided to instill a training regimen in my play sessions.  My execution’s been ass since school started up again, and I attribute that to me coming home from a long day at school, forgoing training mode, and blasting through scrubs online in championship mode with basics and varying latencies.

So anyway, here’s the rules.  I can’t go online until I accomplish each of these in a session.

  • Seismo XX Seismo – from close to midscreen, lp lp mp mp hp hp hp-Feint, EXs sprinkled.  Do this 5x in a row on left side and then on right side.
  • s.MP / c.MP SJC Ultra – Do this 3x in a row on left side then on right side.
  • j.HK, FFF xx EX Seismo – Do this 5x in a row on left side then on right side.
  • j.HK, c.HP xx EX Seismo SJC FADC Ultra – Do this 3x on left and right
  • j.HK, c.HP xx EX Seismo SJC FADC Sweep – Do this 3x on left and right

Those are minimum requirements.  Will add more later.

RE: False Plateau

These are a couple of the responses I got on SRK regarding my False Plateau post.  Many are very wise and so I’d like to save them here for both prosperity and further reference.

Dorion:

See the thing is, the people who never get better are the people who never realize what you came to the realization of tonight. Now that you noticed it, you’ll start to adjust. The mind games will become obvious in time.. Now that you’re looking for them.

Reece:

@Tsumuji, yo what do you say you work on gettin comfortable outside of your comfort zone. That can range from doin shit that you normally wouldnt to loosening the spring on your stick so that its like everyone elses’ stick so that if you use another person’s stick youre not outta your element. Either that or never play on anyone elses’ stick but your own lol. But if you do end up doing the spring readjustment and you acclimate well, help me convince Zaine to continue to work on using a REAL (jap) stick. ahaha. Both of you have that problem whereas if you guys arent using your own stick that youre comfortable with, whether you dont wanna annoy people by changing out sticks every match, (more so Zaine than you bc not many ppl use his stick), or just being semi lazy, you miss shit…Dah well, must be a Viper thing.

So yeh, I’m not pro but thats definitely something to consider. That and not giving a fuck sometimes will help. You’ll eventually end up doing something or not doing something that you’ll notice and go “oh shit, okay. I guess this DOES work” or “damn, if I…then…” ect…Allll bc you had a little dose of i dont give a fuck.

If you dont believe that last part, just ask Dorion. Although he CAN do it with Gief’s 12000 HP (YES, it might as well be 12,000), he’ll often jump in and eat hella damage just to see which attack of his will beat whatever attack…Just bc he doesnt give a fuck, that and Gief’s 12000 HP can take it. But after that he has that much more knowledge of his character and whatever matchup.

DrDogg:

Realizing the problem is the first step, but there’s a lot more to it. I think a big issue is playing online and in training mode. How often do you talk to your opponents and actually discuss why they did something? That’s how you become better at a game IMO.

When I play Paul or Arnold in Tekken 6, if they do something that caught me off guard I’ll immediately ask what they were thinking. This helps me understand what’s going through my opponent’s mind and how I can manipulate that to my advantage. I also pay attention to how I react to certain things and look into what I’m thinking when I take a hit and why I took that hit.

It’s really just about not mindlessly playing. I think Paul said it best one day stating, “It seems like you’re just throwing out good attacks instead of having a plan that you’re trying to execute. What are you trying to do?” Or something along those lines.

A-Rodt:

@Tsumuji – I’ve been reading a couple articles lately that have really been seeming to help me out with the psychological aspects of winning. Prior to reading these articles I hadn’t won any G1 tournaments online. After reading these articles and playing online for like 2 or 3 hours, I won three G1 tournaments. They helped me not really change my game per se, but more so think about the tactics that I’m using, why they are or are not effective, and how I can turn them into tactics that are more efective or make a decision to abandon that tactic all together. The first articles were these ones on footsies -
Intro – http://sonichurricane.com/?p=460
Chapters 1-5 – http://sonichurricane.com/?cat=8 (starts at the bottom)
next is a book written on tournament mindset that’s helping me along
http://www.sirlin.net/ptw

Reading through these articles helped me come to a realization. The higher and higher level play you are at, its no longer about the knowledge of what beats what, and it starts becoming more an issue of “ok, I know this beats this, how do I get him to throw that so I can beat it.” sorta deal. Anyway, check those articles out, see if it doesn’t blow your mind a little.

Hello world!

Here’s the first post on my new sub-blog.  Like my friend Francis, I figured it’d be a good idea if I start writing down my thoughts as a Street Fighter player.  I’m doing my best to organize it as well as possible.  Hopefully the categories work out well.

For starters, my name is Jon and I play Street Fighter IV.  I’ve been playing since Feb 2009 when the game came out on consoles.  I just recently started going to real tournaments, such as the AZ Ranbats, but even at the beginning I participated in the Gamestop National Tournament and won Round 1.  I live close to AZ Mills where there is a SFIV Netcity cabinet, and every now and then I go there for some competition outside of online.

My first time playing the game, I played Ken.  I switched to Cammy the moment I unlocked her in the console game, and then played her a bit and got used to the mechanics of the game (Fireball/SRK motions, dealing with flowchart Kens, etc).  I then moved to Ryu, where I had much greater success (Comboing into Ultra!).  Now I’ve finally settled on my character for Street Fighter IV, Crimson Viper.  I keep Ryu as my secondary because he is just too good in the game and too versatile, but I would ultimately like to be exclusively a Viper player.

This blog will serve partly as a way of chronicling my findings and experiences as a player and partly as a repository for all of the knowledge I glean from the internet, most of it being from SRK.  As such, I have categories and subcategories relating to matchup strategies and movesets.  I hope this blog blooms into a valuable resource.
